Bandon - briefly ( Oregon Coast ) : The gallery documents an overnight stay at Bandon, Oregon, or Bandon-by-the-Sea, as the town styles itself, on our way south along the Oregon and California coasts. We had beautiful weather, beautiful light, both in the late afternoon and evening of the day of our arrival, and in the early morning of the day of our departure.

This gallery is under construction. While I'm in the process of editing and uploading, the pictures will be in reverse order of uploading, i.e. most recently uploaded at the top of the gallery. Once completed, the gallery will be sorted to chronological order. I hope you enjoy it!

New - Water Musing : Water is a muse - a source of creative inspiration. It can also cause one to muse, to reflect on the sights before one, and their explanation or cause. Water, itself, with light, creates reflections.

A whole string of word and thought associations arise from the gallery title, so a broad range of images will fit it. I'll place here new images of water itself, primarily closeups, and of water interacting with other things. When the images are "retired" to more permanent galleries, they will probably end up in several different ones.

New - Autumn Joy : Observing the kaleidoscope of color changes that autumn brings to the upper midwest fills me with great joy each year.

New Uploads - miscellaneous subjects : Photos of subjects that don't fit any of the specialized categories for recent uploads.

Photos will stay here several weeks, typically, a month at the most, and then be transferred to their permanent home galleries. In some cases I'll indicate what the target gallery is, if it isn't obvious from the subject of the picture.

Coronado, California - a morning at the beach : Between the Pacific ocean and San Diego bay lies the Coronado peninsula, including the enlarged northern tip which is sometimes referred to as Coronado Island. At this tip is the quaint town of Coronado or Coronado Island, with its iconic Victorian resort hotel, Hotel del Coronado, or 'the Del' to locals. The town is reached by car via a 'flying' bridge (the Coronado Bay Bridge) across the bay. Along the narrow strip of peninsula, below the 'island' lie miles of white sand beaches, some of the best in southern California. These pictures are my attempt to capture the atmosphere of a bright March morning there. All but the first two were taken at Silver Strand State Beach.

Riding the wind - Kite surfing at Carlsbad Beach, California : Gray skies and rain in the morning gave way to sun and brisk winds (gale force by evening!) in the early afternoon. On our way from San Diego to Anza Borrego SP we paused at Carlsbad Beach (southern California) and watched a man kite surfing, or kite boarding, and watched him being watched. At least one of the most interested spectators seemed to be his son.

Torrey Pines SR, CA : Quoting from the home website for the Torrey Pines State Reserve:

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast! Because of the efforts and foresight of the people in this area, 2000 acres of land are as they were before San Diego was developed -with the chaparral plant community, the rare and elegant Torrey pine trees, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. One can imagine what California must have looked like to the early settlers, or to the Spanish explorers, or even to the first California residents here, the Kumeyaay people.

See their link: http://www.torreypine.org/

Even the brief time I spent there on my way up the coast, and then inland to the deserts, was enough to make me long to return here and hike more of the trails.

New - Whispers of Change (summer into autumn) : Pictures of the first signs of the death of summer and the coming of autumn. Fruit ripening, leaves changing color and dropping. Seeds blowing in the wind from grasses and wildflowers. Pictures of these first 'anomalies' amidst a sea of green and blooming things.

Note added October 14, 2009: Because of travel from mid-September through early October, I pretty much missed the rest of this transitional period. In week or so I'll disperse these images to their permanent galleries.

New - South American Sampler : While I work away on finishing editing my photos from a trip to South America this past May, I want to share a few representative images from each of the places we visited. (In Peru, Lima, the Sacred Valley including Ollantaytambo and Pisac, Machu Picchu, and Cusco. In Ecuador, Quito and the Galapagos Islands.)

Unlike most of my "new" galleries, this one will have the pictures in chronological order, the order in which I took them, rather than keeping the newest uploads at the top of the list. It will take a few days for me to complete this sampler. I hope you enjoy it.
