NaturePhotographers > arctangent  > 000 - Newest Uploads > Hot Shots #2 - Tropical and Temperate Plants
This is a collection of some of my favorite shots of tropical plants from various conservatories. The few temperate zone plants I've taken recent pictures of will go into this gallery for tropical plants. Look for the companion "Hot Shots #1" gallery to this one. Just for fun, I've decided to map tag the parts of the world where various plants are native, rather than locations of the individuals I photographed. In the case of orchids, many of which are created (non-wild) hybrids, I've tagged some for the general location in the wild of one of the genus's used in the hybridization.

This is now a 'sampler gallery', with many of the images collected from galleries in my 'Cyber Conservatory' (Nature Category - http://arctangent.smugmug.com/Nature/Cyber-conservatory-plants), so I have decided to sort it in reverse order of upload, rather than by caption. Images here will come and go, and will be selected more for visual impact than for identification purposes. Because I keep adding to the gallery, even though many of the images are 'old', I've decided to leave the gallery in the Newest Uploads category, at least for now.

As with most plants, amazing details are revealed when you look closely. I hope you'll take the time to view at least some of these images in their larger sizes, or download them and view them with "zoomable" viewing software. Above all, enjoy!

Bromeliad bloom cup.
Spring is a blooming season in the conservatory, too.

Thanks to each of you who took the time to express their enjoyment of my 'double framed' Spanish mission shot yesterday.
Hairy and sparkly.

Brown Spiderwort, Siderasis fuscata
Family Commelinaceae . . . Native to South America
The points of personal interest to me in the sight, and hence the shot, were the overall hairiness of the leaves (about which more later) and the zillions of tiny rainbow sparkles on the surfaces of the leaves. You can only get a hint of the sparkles even in the large sizes, but can readily see them in 'original', especially in the purple underside of the center leaf..

About the hairs: I did a little looking online about terminology for leaf parts and learned that leaves which have hairy surfaces are termed 'pubescent', and there are dozens of technical terms for the exact nature of the hairs. For example, these straight, fine hairs which cover the surfaces, not just the leaf margins, would be termed 'sericeus', provided they are soft (silky) and not stiff or stinging or aren't sticky from secretions or...you get the picture.

FYI, if it matters, the shadows were cast by natural light. I didn't use a flash. Also, I don't know for sure what all those pale yellow bits that dot the leaves are. They fell from taller plants onto this low-growing spiderwort. They don't really look like pollen, but maybe...

I don't know what it is. I just liked the pattern made by the fronds or leaves.

Bloom of a pitcher plant, Family Sarraceniaceae.
The small bed of carnivorous plants at MBG contains two varieties of pitcher plants, both native to North America. This is the Yellow Pitcher Plant, Sarracenia alata.

One of dozens of hanging baskets of fuchsias in the conservatory.
Last August and September the Temperate House of the Conservatory was awash with fuchsias, bougainvilleas, and other tender perennials in riotous colors. Somehow I never got around to processing any of the many picktures I took of them, so I reached back into the archives, choosing one almost at random, for today's post.

Unframed version of a DailyPhotos post for D061-2013

An almost red subject for an almost-Valentine's Day post for DailyPhotos.
I hope to have something red to post for tomorrow, and to warm up to that possibility, I chose pink for today.
This is the bloom (not really open yet) of the bromeliad Aechmea mariae-reginae. The pink is, of course, part of the foliage, not part of the flowers. Don't you just love bromeliads?

Adolescent(?) Anthureum
Most anthureum spathes that I've seen are either bright white or some shade of deep fuchsia or red. The inbetween-ness of this one appealed to me.

Anthureum
Multiple filters applied. I wanted to achieve a better tonal balance between the vivid blossom and the dark leaves.
(If I recall, I used posterize, colored pencil, and maybe one other; I was just goofing around. Whatever I did, I reduced the opacity of those layers quite a bit)
