 From what I've read, bruised or rotting ginkgo fruit smells nasty.  Most people prefer to plant only male ginkgo trees for that reason.  The fruit, and/or the nuts are edible if properly treated.  I thought they looked lovely while still on the tree.  None had fallen, to be stepped on, or to rot, so there was no onerous odor when I saw this tree.
