Photos of subjects that don't fit any of the specialized categories for recent uploads.

Photos will stay here until I accumulate enough new ones or until I'm tired of seeing them here, and then be transferred to their permanent home galleries. In some cases I'll indicate what the target gallery is, if it isn't obvious from the subject of the picture.

Do you recognize this man? My camera does.
This larger than life sculpture is so realistic that it activates my camera's face detection feature and locks it's focus there.

I thought I'd follow up yesterday's shot of a sublime experience (hand feeding wild birds) with something on the ridiculous side. This is the sculpture representing the sense of taste in the Five Senses portion of the Lena Meijer Children's Garden. I used the eyeball from this garden as my opening shot when I joined the DailyPhotos community. This outrageous over-sized tongue with its Clara Bow lips (or as Jean-Yves suggests, Mick Jagger lips) makes me laugh. I hope you at least get a chuckle from it.

I was very cheered yesterday by the overwhelming response to my shot of the titmouse feeding from my sister's hand. Thanks to all who took the time to comment. The shot shot to the number 2 spot in my Popular Photos ranking. I wish each of you could, someday, have the same thrill we enjoyed. At least now you know one place to come to in order to do just that.
Look as well as listen.
Ann and Robert H. Lurie Tower, which houses a 60 bell grand carillon.
This is the east side, the one that faces the large open common space of the main portion of North Campus.

DP121-2013 Posted May 1; processed ditto

From a distance the tower looks like a rather conventional (but not especially attractive, in my opinion) design, with normal verticals, horizontals, and right angles. But walk up close and examine it. You'll think you're in a space warp. There are few if any right angles. Even some of the lines you'd expect to be horizontal are not. It must have been a nightmare to construct. It is also extremely difficult to photograph in a way that reveals all of the distortions because of the inherent perspective distortions in photographs. This photo gives just a hint of all the oddities to be found in this extremely odd building.

(I'll have to do my commenting later today, probably much later. My sister arrives today for a two week visit. Yippee!)
D119-2013 Lichen coating a carved draped urn, which is a familiar motif on memorial markers in the late 19th century.
There is no consensus on the symbolism of the motif. The word 'urn' itself derives from uro, the Latin for 'burn'. The association is that historically all containers for ashes from cremations were called urns. Keeping in mind that original meaning of 'urn', the use of the classic urn shape in grave memorials can be taken to stand for the dust and ashes to which the body returns, while the soul is set free, being immortal. The drapery or shroud is somewhat vaguely described as standing for the separation between the material world and the world of the spirit.
