Nature Galleries

Geology, rocks, minerals : Pictures, from closeups to landscapes, that illustrate various aspects of geology and the nature of various minerals. Also pictures of rocks, boulders, pebbles, etc. of mixed, unknown, or uncertain composition that appealed to me. In a few cases, photos of manmade composites of interesting rocks or minerals.

I could justify including almost every picture taken in some of the national and state parks of the western United States. However, I'll limit pictures from those places to ones that illustrate particular materials or processes. If you see photos here from places like the Grand Canyon, for example, there is almost certainly a separate gallery devoted to each such place.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a trained geologist, just a curious retired scientist (in a different field) with a strong interest in the natural world. If I have mis-stated any of the geologic information in my figure captions, the responsibility is mine, and I welcome any corrections or additions any of you might care to offer.

Art in Nature : Images of things in nature that focus on some aspect of visual appeal that goes beyond mere recording of the normal view of the objects or scenes in question. 'Art' is used here is a rather loose sense, in the sense that a certain amount of imagination was required to produce the images, and more imagination still on the part of the viewer to see what I saw, and that there is a certain aesthetic quality to the result. These are very subjective choices, of course.
