Observing the kaleidoscope of color changes that autumn brings to the upper midwest fills me with great joy each year.

Bumper crop. The high bush cranberries produced a prodigous crop of berries this year. I like the way the circles of confusion in the background mimic the shape of the berries and almost seem to hang in the air like bunches of light. October 10, 2009
Not all maples turn yellow and red. This one is passing through a variegated phase with cream, pink, and purple, before reaching its final coloration. I'll have to go back to see what that is.

Each autumn, I sort of collect colors of foliage, trying to see how broad a spectrum nature provides that year. I don't know what this shrub or small tree is, but I liked it's unusual purplish color.
Nothing looks quite like an ash tree in autumn, with its mix of bright yellow and deep maroon leaves. Sadly, the infestation of emerald ash borer beetles in Ohio and Michigan, and other parts of the country, is making this sight ever more rare and precious.
