NaturePhotographers > arctangent  > Nature > Four Seasons > 2012 Winter - Not Worth the Wait
Final assessment as of March 2012: No, it wasn't worth the long wait.
I can't remember a year when there was so little true winter weather in NW Ohio and SE Michigan until January. So little snow. So little weather that was cold enough for long enough to allow ice to form on rivers, lakes, ponds, or even puddles. It remains to be seen whether what is left of this year's winter can make up for this deficiency. Yes, as a photographer I long for long snowy cold spells punctuated with the clearest brightest sunniest days of the year. As of early January, my photo opportunities have been pretty pathetic. Things didn't get much better during February. March turned out to be the warmest March on record for Ann Arbor, with a higher monthly average temperature than the following April!!!

Pseudo aerial icescape.
In the country of ice, valleys come and go overnight, overday, over time.

Controlling the point of focus is not one of the strengths of the Sony nex-5. I tried unsuccessfully to get it to focus on the sparkly surface of the ice, but it insisted on focusing on the 'distant' reflections of the overhanging trees. The sparkles show here as the diffuse circles of confusion. At least you can see some of the light dispersion into rainbow colors in those "sparkles". Iiswiis.

Dark 'valleys' in the icy 'landscape'. Another shot that suggests an aerial shot from high up.

The snow-capped rock reminded me of a little chalet. Note that the rock is being heated by the sun enough to melt some of the snow, even though the ambient temperature was around 10 F at the time!

The branch tips reminded me of caterpillars, with needles for bristles, or legs, and cones or buds (I''m not sure which) for mouth parts.

Apart from the cold temeratures (~10 F) and a wind chill in the negative digits, it was a very pleasant day for a walk through the neighborhood.
