In addition to pictures I took specifically to illustrate mosses and ferns, there are photos here, collected from other galleries, that show some of the charming or picturesque ways in which mosses in particular, 'invade' various environments.

Topaz Spring millrace. This shows the slot in the concrete wall of the millrace into which a board is placed in order to block the exit of the spring water from the side of the millrace. When the picture was taken, this board was, instead, inserted in a similar slot farther along the millrace (toward the mill), preventing the flow of water to the mill. It's a crude kind of a valve.
Topaz Spring millrace, with watercress growing where the water is diverted to the North Fork of the White River. The water swirls where it makes a right angle turn to exit the millrace, and this creates a quiet pocket for the watercress to grow in.
Coastal redwoods.

Some trees were festooned in moss, with ferns growing from the branches. There is so much fog and mist in this rain forest environment that plants can get all the moisture they need from the air itself.

"Trees of Mystery", near Klamath, California.
Nature wins, as she always will, eventually.

It seems ironic that this old-fashioned rolltop stone with its carving of twining ivy should be overcome with growth...lichen and moss, not ivy, but still...
