flowers-flowers-and-more-flowers > arctangent  > Nature > Vegetation > 2012 Wildflowers of No. America
I have decided to keep a separate gallery of wildflowers for each current year. During that year the gallery will be sorted in reverse order of date taken so that the most recent pictures appear at the beginning of this gallery. At the end of each year I'll collect the pictures into the main wildflower gallery, which is sorted in ascending order of date taken. See that gallery here: http://arctangent.smugmug.com/Nature/Vegetation/Wildflowers-Past-Years/5424475_QmrpZJ. I'll also re-sort the year's gallery in ascending order.

Included here are any flowers seen growing in wild or natural environments, as well as species known to occur in the wild but seen planted in various garden settings. Flowers might be native to North America, or alien imports, mainly from Europe.

D149-2012 Wild Ginger, Asarum canadense
Family Aristolochiaceae Native to eastern North America
This is in a patch of cultivated wild ginger. All forms of asarum that are cultivated in gardens are done so almost exclusively for the foliage, as ground covers. Asarum canadense has large velvety leaves.

D149-2012 European wild ginger, Asarum europaeum
Family Aristolochiaceae Native to Europe; widely cultivated for ornamental value as a ground cover outside its native range.
European ginger has shiny or glossy leaves that are smaller and stifferthan the larger, velvety leaves of Asarum canadense.

Note: There is a companion photo, here http://smu.gs/MTVhXd which smugmug has, for inexplicable reasons, 'filed' out of place at the end of the gallery. This sort of sorting error is becoming all to frequent.
D149-2012 Campanula 02
Some species of bellflower. Both the white and purple forms seem identical in flower shape and size. Ditto for the leaves.
Genus Campanula Species unknown Family Campanulaceae
This shot, though poorly focused to show off the white blossoms, does have the virtue of showing the lovely woodland setting in which I found them.

D149-2012 Campanula 03
Some species of bellflower. Both the white and purple forms seem identical in flower shape and size. Ditto for the leaves.
There's a tiny arthropod, or perhaps just the exo-skeleton on one, just below the top blossom on the stalk.

Some species of bellflower. Both the white and purple forms seem identical in flower shape and size. Ditto for the leaves.
Genus Campanula Species unknown Family Campanulaceae
The critter in this shot seems to be a black ant, in the 2nd blossom down from the top of the stalk.

D149-2012 Unidentified wildflower
The blossoms are narrow tubes, pale pink. They are borne in clusters from single stalks that emerge from each of the leaf axils on the upper stalk. The upper leaves are opposite and narrow. The stalk is hairy. The lower leaves are broader and strongly serrated. This is a petite plant. Note the clover leave just to the right of the base of the stalk for a size reference.

Some species of bellflower. Both the white and purple forms seem identical in flower shape and size. Ditto for the leaves.
Genus Campanula Species unknown Family Campanulaceae
A black swallowtail butterfly (description, not identification term) flew into the shot just as I pressed the shutter. I've posted a cropped version of this in the Invertebrates gallery, here http://smu.gs/MzwY3B.
