Places - Far Galleries

Bryce Canyon part 2 - Inspiration Point : These are pictures from a brief trip to southern Utah in early April, 2008.

After adding the final half dozen pictures from Inspiration Point (August 19, 2009), I have rearranged the gallery in ascending chronological order.

To see Bryce Canyon is to love it. We happened to be there at a good time...early enough to avoid the mobs of tourists during the summer and to find snow still on the ground, which adds greatly to visual appeal, but late enough that most of the main overlooks, roads, and trails were open, not snowed in.

I will create a new gallery in my 'Places - Far' category for the completed pictures of each section of the park that I photographed.

Bryce Canyon part 1 - Bryce Point : Pictures from Bryce Point, one of the major overlooks at Bryce Canyon National Park.

I have decided to create separate galleries for each part of the park that I photographed, at least until I finish editing the photos. Once I finish the pictures for a particular area, I'll move them out of the 'recent uploads' category into a separate gallery in the 'Places - Far' category.

Here is a link to the current 'recent' gallery for Bryce Canyon. http://arctangent.smugmug.com/gallery/8754804_M4crW#489950876_FEztZ

Torrey Pines SR, CA : Quoting from the home website for the Torrey Pines State Reserve:

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast! Because of the efforts and foresight of the people in this area, 2000 acres of land are as they were before San Diego was developed -with the chaparral plant community, the rare and elegant Torrey pine trees, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. One can imagine what California must have looked like to the early settlers, or to the Spanish explorers, or even to the first California residents here, the Kumeyaay people.

See their link: http://www.torreypine.org/

Even the brief time I spent there on my way up the coast, and then inland to the deserts, was enough to make me long to return here and hike more of the trails.

Come Fly Away ... A biplane ride near San Diego : On a recent trip to southern California, a friend and I took biplane rides from a company called Barnstorming Adventures (see link to their website below). They fly out of Montgomery Field, which is in the northern suburbs of San Diego. The flights were in vintage biplanes that dated to the 1920's. They began life as Travel Air 2000's, fitted with inline engines. They have since been fitted with more reliable radial engines, and as such would be considered to be Travel Air 4000's. They are painted in the original factory color scheme of navy blue and orange.

I have tried to map the course of my own flight with the "map this" feature. The two planes flew close together part of the time, and separately part of the time. It was great fun, and I highly recommend this to any of you planning a visit to the area. Check the company out at:

http://www.barnstorming.com/index.html

The company offers a wide range of flights, not just in biplanes, but also in an SNJ-4 'Texan' (a WWII advanced trainer) and in Varga VG-21s (for simulated aerial combat).

San Diego - a day on and near the water. : I took a trip to southern California in late March. This first gallery chronicles a day spent at the San Diego Maritime Museum, and on a whale watching cruise that departed from the dock where some of the museum's ships are moored.

If you're interested in sailing on the yacht 'America', a replica of the original winner of the sailing prize that became The Americas Cup, or just want more info about the yacht, visit the website:

If you only want to see what are the latest additions, please use the "Photo Timeline" on my smugmug home page, http://arctangent.smugmug.com/

Sedona Hot Air Balloon Ride : This gallery is a work in progress. Please note that the newer uploads will be at the "back" of the gallery because of the chronological nature of the images.

I hope you'll take advantage of the "mapped" photos to follow the trip on the ground, especially if you're at all familiar with the area around Sedona. Unless otherwise noted, the map tags are for the main subject of the view, not the balloon's location. Be sure to select the satellite or hybrid version of the map, so you can see the actual terrain on the map.
The gallery chronicles a hot air balloon ride over the red rock country west of Sedona, Arizona, taken with my two sisters on April 3, 2008. I'll keep adding to the gallery until the "trip" is completed, so keep checking back if you enjoy pictures of such activities. Once the gallery is done, I'll move it into my "Places - Far" category. Note that the time signatures in the EXIF data are for EDT, not the MST (equivalent to PDT) that Arizona was on. There is a three hour difference between them. The lift-off came around 6:30 a.m. local time.

If you're looking for a great company to take a balloon ride with in Sedona, you can't do better than Northern Light Balloon Expeditions, (928) 282-2274. Check out their website [http://www.northernlightballoon.com/ ]. They feature small gondolas, so everyone gets a good view, and flying permits to fly over some of the best scenery in the area.

California - north coast : Places on or near the northern coast of California, including redwoods country. Closeups of local vegetation and flowers, other than the giant redwoods, spruce, and fir trees, will go in appropriate nature folders.

For now, I've sorted the pictures in reverse chronological order.
