Ozarks > arctangent  > Places - Far > Missouri > Dillard Mill, Missouri Ozarks
Dillard Mill Historic Site is near the now miniscule community of Dillard, Missouri, near Davisville. The mill is located in Crawford County, in what is considered the upper Ozarks. Unlike Alley Mill, Dillard Mill is situated along a stream, the Huzzah Creek. A dam across the creek creates a mill pond, and the drop of water from the pond through the mill sluice provides power for the mill.

Because of the abundance of deep springs with high flows, and gushing rivers , the settlers in the Missouri Ozarks had no lack of good locations for grist mills and saw mills, both essential adjuncts to successful farming communities. Missouri has kept and treasured this special heritage. A visit to the Ozarks wouldn't be complete without seeing one or more of these surviving relics of a bygone era.

Pictures of springs and rivers without such mills are in a separate gallery. Pictures of Topaz Mill and Spring have been moved to their permanent gallery in the 'Places - Far' category.

arctangent > Lombard Chains Saws, advertised on the front of Cottrell's Store, Dillard, MO., which also operated as the Dillard Post Office.

A little internet research on the Lombard Chain Saw manufacturing history puts up upper limit of 1984 on this sign, and a lower limit of 1943. I'm guessing the sign dates to the 1950's or 1960's, before the company fell on hard times.
arctangent > The general store in Dillard, MO, on which this sign was posted, may be long closed and abandoned, but you can still "7up your thirst away" if you choose.
arctangent > Dead Letter Office.

The Post Office sign on the porch of the Dillard, MO, general store / post office building (long ago abandoned) is barely legible.
arctangent > Window, Dillard, MO, general store / post office.
arctangent > Detail of the porch in front of the Dillard, MO., post office / general store. The porch is faced in the local building material, "Ozark giraffe rock", a man-made patchwork quilt of local stones.
arctangent > Economic hard times came to Dillard many years ago.
arctangent > Dillard is dying.

The small town of Dillard, Missouri, once boasted a general store with a post office. This is all that is left of it.
arctangent > Rue anemone growing in an unexpected place...a rocky crevice of a boulder beside the rock dam at Dillard Mill.
arctangent > Huzzah Creek below the Dillard Mill rock dam, just as it turns north again.
