Water Levels Diary at Crooked Lake : In recent years the water level at Crooked Lake has risen dramatically. There are still seasonal variations, and the peak seems to come in late Spring or early Summer. Water stands behind the breakwater throughout the summer, recedes in Autumn, then rises again through the winter. These pictures, listed in ascending chronological order, are intended to document this rise and fall in the water levels.

Crooked Lake - Winter : Depictions of the lake, boathouse, breakwater, etc., in the grip of winter's snow and ice. Some shots are found only in this gallery, and others might appear also in other of the Crooked Lake galleries or galleries for more general topics, such as 'Snow and Ice Details'. Because of the danger of getting stuck, we rarely visit the lake when there is heavy snow on the ground, so the record of its appearance is rather spotty.

Crooked Lake - Boathouse & surroundings : Pictures of the old boathouse, built sometime in the 1930's I believe. The pictures chronicle among other things, the rise and fall of water levels at the lake, and the effects the forces of nature have had on it over the years. More pictures detailing the seasonal changes in water level that have caused flooding behind the concrete breakwater in recent years are in a separate gallery. The ravages of repeated periods, months in length, when the boathouse was flooded, dating back to 2007, have produced rot in the lower parts of the structure. This has necessitated emergency stop-gap measures to keep the entire structure from collapsing. The work on this began in late November, 2012.

Crooked Lake - Dock & Docked Boats : The dock and breakwater areas, and the sailboat and rowboat at the dock. Pictures of the sailboat being rigged and sailed are now in a separate gallery. The gallery includes scenic or landscape shots, details of the dock itself, and details of the moored sailboat and rowboat (which strictly speaking isn't berthed at the dock, but farther along the breakwater). Pictures that are primarily of reflections of the boats or parts of the boats in the water along the shore are in a separate gallery with other reflections and water shots.

Crooked Lake - Water Close-ups Behind the Breakwater : Since the spring of 2007 there has been standing water behind the breakwater for at least part of the year. This has provided opportunities to photograph a variety of shots where ripples and/or reflections in that standing water, or the movement of water through breaches in the breakwater are the most important aspect of the composition. Shots of fish, frogs, insects, etc. that were seen in the water remain in the old original Crooked Lake Close-ups gallery (now labeled as being "non-water", but with the fore-mentioned exception).

Crooked Lake Close-ups Not Water : Miscellaneous close-ups of things seen at the lake where the primary interest is not the lake water or the water behind the breakwater. It does include shots of plants growing in or near such water, or animals found in or near it, where the water itself is not the subject of the shot. If the choice of which gallery a shot should go in isn't clear, I'll probably stick it arbitrarily in one gallery and collect it to the other(s).

Marked Trees for removal or pruning 2012 : In late February 2012 the power company informed residents that tree pruning and removal was scheduled in order to keep the space around the power lines free of present and potential overhanging branches.
