The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, in the NE corner of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a 125 acre campus that is laid out in a variety of areas for displaying the sculpture collection in a context of extensive plantings of trees and flowers, along with a number of charming water features. Entry into the gardens is through a large building that houses several conservatories for special plant environments, galleries, meeting rooms, etc. This photo gallery starts with pictures I took on my first visit there, in early October of 2010. The only camera I had with me was my point-and-shoot Canon G10 (with the noisiest sensor ever created). Still, I hope the pictures give you a flavor of some of the main features of this marvelous facility. There was a Chihuly exhibit of art glass mounted in the gardens, and pictures of those pieces are in a separate gallery. Voting was just finishing up for the Grand Rapids ArtPrize, billed as the largest prize for art in the world ($250,000 Grand Prize, and $450,000 total prize money). Some of the entries were available for viewing in a garden that lies just outside the main building, and is thus free to the viewing public. Pictures of those works appear in a separate gallery, also.

DP136-2013 Posted May 16; processed ditto

I thought I'd follow up yesterday's shot of a sublime experience (hand feeding wild birds) with something on the ridiculous side. This is the sculpture representing the sense of taste in the Five Senses portion of the Lena Meijer Children's Garden. I used the eyeball from this garden as my opening shot when I joined the DailyPhotos community. This outrageous over-sized tongue with its Clara Bow lips (or as Jean-Yves suggests, Mick Jagger lips) makes me laugh. I hope you at least get a chuckle from it.

I was very cheered yesterday by the overwhelming response to my shot of the titmouse feeding from my sister's hand. Thanks to all who took the time to comment. The shot shot to the number 2 spot in my Popular Photos ranking. I wish each of you could, someday, have the same thrill we enjoyed. At least now you know one place to come to in order to do just that.
D289-2012 This room of the Conservatory is typically given over to special displays which are often seasonal in character. This year the theme seems to be chrysanthemums, apples, pumpkins, and ornamental kale or cabbage. The color scheme in this room was white, purple, and yellow.

The two visible ID signs are for the ornamental grass (Switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, a native North American plant) and flowering cabbage (Brassica oleracea 'Osaka White'; the sign misspells the species name).

I'm no mum expert, but I believe the yellow mums in the shot are called 'spider mums'.

The south face of the Conservatory Buildings, lit by the sun of an autumn afternoon.
The perspective is from the path through the English Perennial Garden. Clearly there were still some colorful blooms...mostly chrysanthemums and asters, complimented by ornamental grasses.

Being, now, the most popular tourist destination in Michigan, the Gardens can be overrun by bus loads of school children and people from retirement homes. Both were well represented the day we visited.
