Maize and blue (colors of my alma mater), blue and gold, yellow and blue. A color combination that generally speaks of summer or autumn, but can be found in unexpected places.

As suprising as it was to see a tree blooming in mid-November in Michigan, it was even more surprising to me to see a tiny fly visiting the blooms.

D309-2012 Sargent Crabapple, Malus sargentii.
This variety produces yellow fruit which can ripen into a lovely amber shade. It is planted in a number of locations throughout the garden, including this tree adjacent to the main parking lot, and others along the south bank of Crosby Lake.

Controlling the point of focus is not one of the strengths of the Sony nex-5. I tried unsuccessfully to get it to focus on the sparkly surface of the ice, but it insisted on focusing on the 'distant' reflections of the overhanging trees. The sparkles show here as the diffuse circles of confusion. At least you can see some of the light dispersion into rainbow colors in those "sparkles". Iiswiis.

Magnoliaceae 31 25 Tulip Tree foliage

Tulip Tree (also tulip poplar or yellow poplar, among other local common names.)
Liriodendron tulipifera ; Family: Magnoliaceae; Native to: Eastern North America

Colorful fall foliage can't be counted on in the tulip trees in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. This is about as good as it gets.
