Blue Spring, by consensus one of the most beautiful of the many springs in the Missouri Ozarks.

The Missouri Ozarks is a region rich in geology. One consequence of the geologic make-up of the area is an abundance of beautiful springs and clear mountain streams and rivers, many of them augmented by the flow from the springs, and ornamented by rapids and falls. Some of the rivers are "shut in", that is confined in part to deep narrow canyons or restricted in other ways, by hard rock layers from the region's distant, violent volcanic past. Opportunities abound for canoers and kayakers, hikers, and day-trippers.

For a good website the summarizes the properties, location, and surroundings of the amazing Blue Spring, see for example: http://mdc.mo.gov/areas/natareas/p124-2.htm

Blue Spring, Missouri. The spring feeds into the Current River.

Panorama of five vertical format images. Taken from the lower observation platform, cropped to remove the platform railing seen in the alternative version. Unfortunately, that also means the lip of the spring, where it drops off into the spring branch that carries the water to the Current River was cropped out of the picture. You can decide which version you prefer.

Information about Blue Spring, standing at the trail head from the parking lot to the spring.

This parking lot is reached by driving down a very steep, very narrow gravel access road. If you take this route to Blue Springs, keep your fingers crossed that you don't meet anyone on the way!

Blue Spring branch, shallow water.
Blue Spring: Grass in the shallow water of the spring branch.

Even though the current clearly is strong, the surface remains smooth enough to give sharp reflections of the few tips of grass blades that breach the surface, without those grass blades acting as point sources for ripples.. It seems so contradictory, but there it is.
Blue Spring, Missouri.

The bright specks are bubbles rising from the shadowy depths. The grass is the picture is all completely submerged. You can see clearly the effect of the current in the spring branch on the grass.
Blue Spring branch: looking downstream.

The surface of the spring is perfectly still and calm, while the spring branch that carries the water to the Current River runs rough and tumble down the grade to the river. It's a deep mystery how all of these spring can pour out so much water and remain so seemingly quiescent.
Blue Spring: Nearly colorless and clear in the shallow margins. Intensely blue and milky in the deepest part. Water forms the surface of virtually everything in this picture, except the tips of a few blades of grass. All of the inky blue is water, not cliffs in shadows.
