A mature tree like this in full bloom is a wonderful sight.

'Sea Nymph' (ceramic, 1938) surrounded by a surf or at least a surfeit of magnolia petals.

The UM's website for public art on the campus says of this piece
"Designed by Gerald Mast and executed by Clivia Morrison (formerly Calder) as part of the Federal Arts Program of the WPA. The materials were paid for by the Michigan League as sponsors of this WPA project. Sponsors of pieces became their owners when the Federal Arts Program was closed in 1940."

The secondary wall plaque, below the title plaque, describes the 1988 restoration of the fountain. It stands against the outer (east) wall of the Courtyard Garden of the Michigan League.

Artificial lighting. Ambiguous terms. What is natural, and what artificial?

DP148-2013 Posted May 28; processed ditto.

The natural way for the artificial light in the picture to be illuminated is by electricity. But I shot this so that the natural light from the sun artificially seems to light this lamp.

For those who are more curious about the what and where, these are blooming serviceberry trees along North University, adjacent to the Chemistry Building of the U of M.

Blossom fall

DP126-2013 Posted May 26; processed ditto

After a night of hard rain, the ground was littered with rhododendron blossoms. These are just as I found them, lying on the trail through the rhododendron plantation.

Fancifully named, and naturally framed.

The hillside with the tree peonies has great drifts of wild geranium filling in the spaces between the peony plants. You see them as diffuse lavender blobs in this shot. This tree peony is P. suffruticosa 'Green Dragon in a Pink Pool'

D137-2013 Tall old pink dogwood, probably nearing the end of its life.
This one stands in the northeast corner of the cemetery, not far from the May family vault. If you look closely you can see the broken ends of branches near the top of the tree that were torn away from larger limbs during a bad ice storm this past winter.

Rising even higher into the sky, behind the dogwood, are the upper branches of a venerable redbud tree (its trunk is the one furthest right in this shot).
