arctangent > Mid-march is, to me, the drabbest time of the year where I live. The snow is off the ground. Nothing much growing yet. B&W fits the mood.
arctangent > March Blahs: The river floodplain is thawing now. Soon I won't be able to walk here without rubber boots. The view is so different now from that of a sunny winter day with a blanket of snow and blue sky overhead.

Under the willow tree.

The strong west wind was riffling the surface of the shallow flooded edge of the pond (to my back as I took the picture). The small pools of water atop the ice remained undisturbed by the wind.

Melted snow had enlarged the pond and flooded the low-lying path around it. This old willow was surrounded by water, with ice closing in fast. The willow leaves in the water reminded me of minnow swimming. The high wind had begun to force some of the leaves up onto the ice that covered most of the pond.

Wind in the willow.

A strong west wind (from the left) was combing the hairy branches of the willow.

Dead tree with hanging bark, base.

A very tall, very dead tree next to the trail. (I couldn't get it all in one shot with the lens I had on the camera.) The most interesting thing about it, at the time, was the fact that huge vines still hang from the upper limbs, and entangled in those vines are great sheets of bark that peel away after the tree died.
