I took a few practice shots using the combination of low limb and distant boulder as an instance of internal framing. Part of the exercise was varying the aperture, and hence the depth of field. I didn't have a tripod with me so really small apertures (high f numbers) were not an option. This shot seemed an acceptable compromise.

When the deciduous trees are bare, and the hosta foliage has been cleared away, you can appreciate that there is so much more than hostas 'going on' all over the Hosta Hillside. There are entire areas planted in dwarf conifers, for example. And in autumn the numerous oriental maple trees are ablaze. Just at this brief time of year there are color accents from various blooming bulbs.

Looking across the face of the Hosta Hillside. Even without any hostas peeking their heads up there is plenty to enjoy in the scene.

Looking along one edge of the upper section of the Harper Conifer collection. Some kind of maple, with its keys still festooning its branches, dominates the foreground, upper left.

I believe that the thing that interested me when I chose to take this shot was the contrast between the bluish needles on some of the conifers (spruce?) in contrast to the darker greens of others.

As the Harper Collection illustrates, there can be interesting color variations among "evergreens". They aren't all green. There are almost an infinite number of greens to be seen among tree needles and leaves, too.

Pines, cypress; juniper, cedar, fir, you name it.
