D149-2012 Cornus kousa chinensis - Standing Tall
It seems to be a characteristic of this variety that blooms are borne on long upright stems, so they rise above each branch.

Cornus kousa 'satomi', Pink Japanese Dogwood
The flower bracts on this specimen were barely pink when I saw it. Perhaps they will turn darker with age.

Cornus kousa 'satomi', Pink Japanese Dogwood
The ID tag on this specimen was barely visible without stepping into a surrounding flower bed, which I was very reluctant to do. It's readable if you zoom in, or perhaps you'll simply take my word that Ive correctly read the binomial name and the name of the hybrid or cultivar (Satomi). From there, a Google search revealed another common name, viz Pink Japanese Dogwood.

The flower bracts on this specimen were barely pink when I saw it. Almost all the discernible color was in the edges of the bracts, and at their very tips.

Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes'
A close-up of a blossom reveals that a few of the small true flowers in the yellow-green center are just beginning to open, with the odd anther having broken free.

Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes'
The blossoms are fairly typical for a kousa dogwood, but the leaves are a variegated color, which can better be seen in other pictures of this specimen (the only one of its kind I've ever seen).

D149-2012 Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes'
Of the shots I took of this tree, this one probably is best for showing the character of the foliage. The leaves have a more 'ruffled' aspect than those of a regular kousa dogwood. They have a darker center, variegated in shades of sage green, and a lighter rim of a cream color that is close to the color of the flower bracts, but is speckled with dark green spots and mottled with regions of pale sage green. Needless to say, each leaf is unique in its pattern of coloration.
