A wonderful surprise awaits hikers who start down the Kettlehole Trail at Hidden Lake Gardens (SE Michigan). At the beginning of the trail stands this mature European weeping beech. You can walk in under the canopy of drooping limbs and enter a different world. You can walk all the way around the tree, studying it and marveling at it from every angle, while feeling yourself cut off from the world outside. A number of the limbs that have drooped all the way to the ground have taken root there and started new upward growth. There isn't a straight limb to be seen. Nor is there a single identifiable main trunk. I wanted so badly to climb it! The only blemish on the experience is seeing all the fools' names that are carved into the delicate bark. Cumulus clouds over Mill Lake Mid-August, mid-afternoon On this afternoon the clouds that formed looked more serious than the usual afternoon clouds that form, then dissipate, but in the end no rain fell. True of virtually every day this August in SE Michigan and NW Ohio. Very, very dry.
Exaggerated... contrast. Cloud layers on a day that threatened to but did not rain.
