Rare for this area - Prairie Trillium
Trillium recurvatum, aka Prairie Trillium or Bloody Butcher. This wildflower is growing at the northern edge of its range. Though not endangered overall, it is threatened in some areas. In Michigan, it is protected by law. This is the only patch of it I have ever seen. Some years rabbits and deer eat all the buds before they ever bloom. This year is a happy exception.

Typically this trillium blooms before the much more common Trillium grandiflorum. I am beginning to see foliage and a few buds of the latter.

Thanks for the warm response to yesterday's shot of woodland daffodils.
