Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Atropunicea'; Family Fagaceae). A variant of European beech. Look closely. There's a pair of glasses hanging from one of the lower limbs of the tree. Beech nuts on a European beech. Not every year brings a crop, at least not a heavy crop, of beech nuts. Even when nut casings or shells appear on a beech tree, many of them may be devoid of actual nuts. This year (2011) seems to be one in which this particular tree produced a heavy crop of actual nuts.
