I chose a framed but unlabeled version for this particular gallery. The unframed, and the framed and labeled versions are also available here: http://smu.gs/HU4cvt and here: http://smu.gs/HU3Yof respectively.
Orange Lichen on Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)
Look closely in the larger sizes and you'll see that the lichen is draped in pale threads or filaments of something...not man-made, and not spiderweb silk. It really requires viewing in size 'Original' to see the threads easily. It's a mystery. I love it.

(You can barely see them in X2; can see them a little better in X3; but they really pop in Original.)

There is a framed, labeled version of this image here: http://smu.gs/HU3Yof

I think this white stuff is animal rather than vegetable, and if so definitely invertebrate! I saw numerous patches or colonies of it on the undersides of leaves in the conservatory on this day. The long thin filaments flying out from these creatures were quite remarkable. This is a shot of the underside of a leaf of the Bird of Paradise plant in the Temperate House of the conservatory.
