Great Egret takes flight.
No one individual stayed long in the same spot. They were constantly shifting around, looking for better fishing spots. There really wasn't anyone or any thing down along the river that would have spooked them and scared them off.

It's hard to tell, even zooming way in, but this egret had just caught a fish.

Egrets were fishing all along the stretch of the Maumee River between Grand Rapids and Providence Park.

The egrets I saw on this day are almost certainly Great Egrets, or Eastern Great Egrets, Ardea alba. They are closely related to Great Blue Herons, Ardea herodias, which are common throughout the area year 'round. In my experience egrets are much less frequently seen during the summer months, which suggests a small breeding population. These may be migratory birds that just stopped briefly at the rapids to fish before continuing their journey. There were probably a dozen or more along the river...more than I'd ever seen at one time at this site.
