Peony season! Hurray!

The start of the peony season is a highlight of the spring for me. It begins with the early blooming tree peonies, such as seen here.

Even though I'll be out photographing the beauty of spring today, I decided to knock out a filtered version of this hellebore and post early rather than wait until evening to process the day's efforts. Newer stuff tomorrow!

Special thanks to those few of you who found yesterday's post and left comments.

D105-2013 Scilla (genus and common name) or Squill.
This early blooming bulb has many species, some of them wild, and native to Europe and Asia. It is commonly planted in the USA, but naturalizes readily, as most homeowners who have ever planted it can attest. They prefer some shade, which is where I found these. Those conditions may not be conducive to capturing the inherent sparkle in the petals, but do allow better saturation of the colors while avoiding blow-out of the white centers. Whole yards full of scilla can now, finally, be seen as I drive around town.

D088-2013 Crocus
These were some of the few I've seen blooming around town. Normally by this date, crocuses would have bloomed pretty much completely and be on their way out.

D088-2013 Winter Aconite, Genus Eranthis, probably E. hyemalis, which is widely grown, and naturalizes easily.
Family Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family) . . . Native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, depending on the species.

I added a layer of sumi-e filter to this version of the shot. See a differently filtered version as my April 4 post to the DailyPhotos community here: http://smu.gs/14PxhlK
