Bleeding hearts are fairly common plantings in cemeteries, with an obvious message, though they are also frequently included in Valentine's Day bouquets, but with a very different message. I think they are so daintily beautiful and so unusual of shape that they are justifiably loved for their own sweet sake.

I thought I'd follow up yesterday's shot of a sublime experience (hand feeding wild birds) with something on the ridiculous side. This is the sculpture representing the sense of taste in the Five Senses portion of the Lena Meijer Children's Garden. I used the eyeball from this garden as my opening shot when I joined the DailyPhotos community. This outrageous over-sized tongue with its Clara Bow lips (or as Jean-Yves suggests, Mick Jagger lips) makes me laugh. I hope you at least get a chuckle from it.

I was very cheered yesterday by the overwhelming response to my shot of the titmouse feeding from my sister's hand. Thanks to all who took the time to comment. The shot shot to the number 2 spot in my Popular Photos ranking. I wish each of you could, someday, have the same thrill we enjoyed. At least now you know one place to come to in order to do just that.

(This shows a portion of a very tall (5-6 ft) bloom spike of one of the many kinds of tropical pitcher plants in the collection of carnivorous plants against a background of a painted wall. While the pitchers, which trap and digest insects, are visually the most interesting feature for most people, I find the flowers of such plants to have great appeal, as well. The flower colors, shapes, arrangements, etc. vary greatly across species, while the general shape of the pitchers varies much less.)
Perfoliate Bellwort (Uvularia perfoliata)
In memory of my mother, with whom I shared a love of wildflowers (among many other things). I still miss her.

Another extremely late post. I have got to break myself of this habit, but it's too tempting to spend these days out and about. I'll catch up on commenting tomorrow, I hope. For those who are curious, I just applied the spherize distortion in photoshop to create this effect...sort of like looking through a magnifying glass. Sorry I don't know what kind of fern it is. It's a young frond, not fully developed, though.

Even though I'll be out photographing the beauty of spring today, I decided to knock out a filtered version of this hellebore and post early rather than wait until evening to process the day's efforts. Newer stuff tomorrow!

Bright Lichen on Dark Stone
It's unusual to see such bright yellow and orange forms of this common leafy lichen in my part of the world. The cool wet conditions of early spring are perfect for bringing forth what I always think of as a 'bloom' of lichen, where the colors all brighten up and growth spurts take place. The entire cemetery seems covered in this mostly green 'fur coat' these days.
