A species of cholla (Cylindropuntia) which is very different from the Jumping Cholla (C. fulgidum) and Teddy Bear Cholla (C. bigelovii). It is probably one of three very similar species that are common in the Sonoran desert, namely Staghorn cholla (Cylindropuntia versicolor), Buckhorn cholla (Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa), or Cane cholla (Cylindropuntia spinosior). Apparently the best way to distinguish among them is by their fruits, and even then it can be difficult, since the species hybridize. Based on descriptions of the fruits of the three species, and on the appearance of the fruit in this and other pictures, I'm going to make a guess that this is Staghorn Cholla. .
