Ogham is an ancient European alphabet in which letters are represented by lines perpendicular or at a diagonal to a baseline, with the number of lines, their orientation, and which side of the baseline they extend to distinguishing among the letters.  The alphabet dates to as early as the 1st century AD.  Controversial claims of Ogham inscriptions in North America imply a European presence in North America that predates 1492, or even Erik the Red.
