D149-2012 Cornus kousa 'satomi', Pink Japanese Dogwood
The flower bracts on this specimen were barely pink when I saw it. Almost all the discernible color was in the edges of the bracts, and at their very tips.

Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes'
A close-up of a blossom reveals that a few of the small true flowers in the yellow-green center are just beginning to open, with the odd anther having broken free.

Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes'
The blossoms are fairly typical for a kousa dogwood, but the leaves are a variegated color, which can better be seen in other pictures of this specimen (the only one of its kind I've ever seen).

D149-2012 Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes'
Of the shots I took of this tree, this one probably is best for showing the character of the foliage. The leaves have a more 'ruffled' aspect than those of a regular kousa dogwood. They have a darker center, variegated in shades of sage green, and a lighter rim of a cream color that is close to the color of the flower bracts, but is speckled with dark green spots and mottled with regions of pale sage green. Needless to say, each leaf is unique in its pattern of coloration.

Young leaves of a tulip tree, backlit by late afternoon sun.
(I used a touch of Paint Daubs filter to highlight the veining in the leaves.)

D149-2012 Mock-orange shrub, genus Philadelphus (species unknown)
I have seen various mock-orange shrubs in bloom in southern Michigan from mid-April through late May this year. Perhaps there are different species with different bloom times. It would be unusual for a single species to have such a long blooming period.

Northern Catalpa, Catalpa speciosa
Family Bignoniaceae Native to eastern United States.
This is a late blooming tree. Only a few trees, most of them Asian imports, bloom later in the season. This year, catalpas were in full bloom by the third week in May in Toledo, Ohio. But at the end of May they were just beginning to bloom in Ann Arbor.

You can see unopened buds in this shot.
