featured: a mystery in the sky - a halo around a contrail

featuring an optical mystery.
look closely. can you see the faint ring around the contrail? i only noticed it when i processed this with topaz labs' micro contrast boost ii filter. whoa, i said to myself, and went back to the original. it's there, but much fainter. I've photographed plenty of contrails, and never seen this before. even so, i don't think it's a camera artifact. i know it isn't a processing artifact. so it must be an optical effect in the sky. but what caused it? any ideas? has anyone else seen such a phenomenon?
one further note. when i turn up the saturation for this image, no additional colors appear in the halo, and only a modest amount of pale yellow appears in the contrail itself.
