This hornbeam sprout has no chance of ever growing to a mature tree, but for now it's happy.

A maple sprout growing among the limestone cobbles on the riverbank.  I doubt it will survive the winter's ice and next spring's floods.

A sprig of mint has sprouted in the shingles of the old boathouse. 
When the water level of the lake was lower, spearmint like this grew in abundance just in front of the breakwater.  After two successive years of extremely high water, this is all that remains.  No more mint for my iced tea!
