What do swans eat?
Crab apples, of course. Huh? Who knew? I certainly didn't until I watched this family unit (mom, dad, and youngster) dining on them at the Toledo Botanical Garden in early November. They definitely seemed to prefer plucking the apples directly from the tree rather than picking up fallen ones from the ground. If you've seen similar behavior, or witnessed swans feeding on other strange things, I'd really like to hear from you. In the captions I somewhat arbitrarily identify one of the adults as the dad. There were no obvious sexual differences in the size of the black knobs on the heads of the swans. I took the first one up from the lake as the dad, and the one that stayed behind with junior as the mom. Sexist, I know. The swan I'm calling the dad has a paler bill than the mom, and junior is missing the very tip of his/her bill. So it is possible to identify the three individuals in the pictures if you look closely enough.Read More
