Mediterranean #17 - Nestor's Palace
Near Pylos, a small town along the southwest coast of the Greek Peloponnese, is a Mycenaean archaeological site that has come to be known as Nestor's Palace, named after a prominent character in Homer's Iliad who is described as ruling at Pylos. On the morning of our stay at Pylos we drove to the site and explored it with the aid our our Greek guides. We also had the benefit of traveling with a lecturer who is on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati (in the Classics department). This university has contributed prominently to the discovery, excavation, and promotion of the site as one of importance to the academic community as well as one well worth a visit by the casual traveler. Our lecturer, Dr. Kathleen Lynch, was able to share both her enthusiasm for the site as it now exists, but also her excitement over additional excavations of nearby locations planned for the near future which will concentrate on Mycenaean sites that were occupied not by rulers and nobility but by the working classes.
