  • Map of the Island of Rhodes.

Map of the Island of Rhodes.

The Island of Rhodes, showing our start point for the day trip, Rodos or Rhodes Town (the harbor) and our destination, Lindos, along the southeast coast of the island. The map was downloaded from the internet and superimposed over one of my own photographs of the trip, to give a starting set of metadata that was consistent with the other shots. I merely fudged the time the 'photo' was 'taken' so this map would sort correctly in my gallery. For scale, Google maps gives the driving distance from Rodos to Lindos as 48 - 49 km, depending on your route out of Rodos.

  • Schematic map of Lindos and environs

Schematic map of Lindos and environs

I downloaded this map from the internet, and superimposed in on one of my own shots (resized) in order to given it a date and time signature in the metadata that was consistent with the other shots in the gallery, so it would sort properly. Note that the compass direction N is slightly down from due left. There's a reason the streets on this map aren't labeled. As nearly as I could tell, they've never been given names.

  • First view of Lindos Bay, through the bus window

First view of Lindos Bay, through the bus window

TTBW: The small bay at the foot of the hill on which the town of Lindos, Rhodes, sits. Along the far right center you can see some of the white-washed houses of Lindos. The weather at this point was inauspicious. We had been warned that it might rain on us...in a place that has about 350 sunny days per year! We got lucky. No rain. The approximate location of the bus when I took this is map tagged. The view is roughly to the southeast. Lindos, Island of Rhodes Taken April 28, 2011; re-edited 2017

Bell Tower for the Church of Panagia

The bell tower of the Church of Panagia (Church of the Assumption) Along the left side of the shot is a business that has a sign which says, I think, Miandros, in mixed Roman and Greek letters. Google maps got no hit for Lindros when I searched on that name, but it did get hits for other locations in Greece. The view is eastward, toward the acropolis, which is partially visible in the background. Lindos, Island of Rhodes Taken April 28, 2011; re-edited 2017 (map coordinates taken from Google Maps)

ΗΑΠΟΛΑΥΣΗ translates as "JOY" ((Iapolausi, or Iapolafsi phonetically; the sign over the doorway). I don't know whether this was a private residence or a place of business.
Note the network of wires above the street. It seems to be there to support the growth of vines. If so, the resulting shade would surely be welcome during hot summer days.

  • Zouk Dance Bar. The entire aspect of this door seems more oriental (Byzantine or Ottoman?) than European to my untrained eye.
Quoting Wikipedia: Zouk is a style of rhythmic music originating from the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Zouk means "party" or "festival" in the local Antillean Creole of French, although the word originally referred to, and is still used to refer to, a popular dance, based on the Polish dance, the mazurka, that was introduced to the French Caribbean in the 19th Century.

Dark clouds threaten in the distance. We were told at the beginning of our day trip that Rhodes is one of the sunniest places in the Mediterranean, but that rain was in the forecast! On one of only, on average, about 15 days a year when it rains here, we were scheduled to make our visit! But we got lucky and stayed dry.
