Mediterranean #16 - Pylos Greece and surroundings
The town of Pylos, Messenia, in the Greek Peloponnese, lies at the southeast corner of the large Bay of Pylos (formerly Navarino). It was our port of call for visits to the Mycenean site of the Palace of Nestor and its companion tholos tomb, and to the Venetian and Ottoman fortress at the neighboring town of Methoni. The entrance to the bay is through an extremely narrow gap between a cluster of small islets and the mainland, and is almost worth the visit by itself. The town is just beginning to be taken over by tourism, so it retains great charm. I've collected here all the pictures starting with our arrival at the dock in the morning, a drive back through the upper reaches of the town on our way from the Palace of Nestor to the north to the town of Methoni and its fortress (see separate gallery, #18), the drive to the harbor after the visit to Methoni, and a short walk about the harbor and the town square after a late leisurely lunch aboard the ship. Finally, there are pictures of our exit from the bay as we pass close to the guardian islets.
