B1 NA tree and Rock peonies, hillside
There are two beds of woody or non-herbaceous peonies in the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden. This gallery features the older of the two, which occupies the hillside along the south border of the area devoted to herbaceous or garden peonies. This bed is shared with wildflowers, garden perennials, and a few rhododendrons, as well as ornamental trees such as redbud and flowering dogwood. The peony plants are variously classed as tree peonies and Rock peonies (P. rockii) and are of Asian origin. Some plants are fairly young, though the bed itself is mature. Often the young plants do not yet have readable labels. Blooming typically begins around the middle of May and lasts for a couple of weeks. Any one plant may be in bloom for just a few days, and any one bloom may last only a day or two.
