Alphabet Challenge: H – Herakles, a Greek Hero
2018 alphabet challenge
H – Herakles, or Hercules as the Romans called him (July 22, 2018)
Herakles is a demi-god in the Greek pantheon. His father was the top god, Zeus, and his mother was the mortal Alcmene. He is considered to be the greatest of the Greek heroes. Most people these days have heard of ‘the Labors of Hercules’, but few know that they were episodes in a penance for killing his wife and children, tasks that were ordered for Herakles by King Eurystheus of Minoa after Apollo instructed Herakles to atone for his crimes by serving the king. But these labors were not the only heroic feats recorded in Greek mythology for Herakles. His adventures began in childhood and continued after he completed his 12 labors. Many of them arose from the intervention of Zeus’ wife Hera, who was Herakles’ sworn enemy. Not rational to blame Herakles for Zeus's peccadilloes, but if you're a goddess, I guess you don't have to be rational.
