The color red, more than any other color, draws the human eye. Artists can have many different reasons for choosing red for their works. The works I have selected for this grouping are all abstract, non-representational, so the red was almost certainly chosen for visual impact, and possibly to help create a mood. It carries no symbolism, and is not chosen to represent faithfully the color in an actual object.
The works are: (top, left to right) (1) Be I (second version) by Barnett Newman (DIA); (2) Creek by Robert Rauschenberg (DIA); (3) Red neon chandelier by Chihuly (Meijer Gardens) / (bottom, left to right) (4) detail (top half) Round Sum by Rauschenberg (TMA); (5) Untitled by Alvin Loving (DIA); (6) Ancestral Memory by Hale Woodruff (DIA)
The individual photos and the montage itself (created in October 2018) are copyrighted by Elizabeth Jean Jacob, with all rights reserved.
