Alphabet Challenge: I – Incan artistry in stonemasonry
2018 alphabet challenge
I – Incan stonemasonry
The Incas were accomplished stonemasons. Many of their dry-stone structures (built without benefit of any mortar or other binding material) have resisted centuries of assault by harsh Andean weather, earthquakes, and vandalism. ‘Impressive’ is too mild an adjective to describe some of their work. ‘Incredible’ would not be an exaggeration. They are famous for fashioning free-form boulders, megaliths even, to fit so perfectly with their neighbors that not the thinnest blade can be inserted between the blocks.
My montage in honor of their feats was created from photos taken in 2009 at four different sites in the Peruvian Andes. These sites are represented in the central panel of four contextual shots. Moving clockwise from the upper left, they are
(1) Old Cusco, the famous Wall of the Incas; (2) Ollantaytambo, a site in the so-called Sacred Valley of the Urubamba River, terraced walls and a temple; (3) Sacsayhuamán, just north of Cusco, megalithic walls of a structure whose purpose is under debate; (4) Machu Picchu, the Sacred Plaza.
Surrounding this central panel are cropped details from other shots taken at those same sites. All of the shots used were either re-edited versions of ones that I had previously uploaded to various galleries in my folder https://arctangent.smugmug.com/Locations-International/2009-South-America/Peru or were edited freshly for this montage, and never previously uploaded to smugmug. All of the full frame photos are now available in the aforementioned folder in the various galleries for Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.
This montage was created in July 2018. It is copyrighted, with all rights reserved. The same is true of the individual photos.
