This montage offers comparisons on different scales of two portraits by the American artist Chuck Close. On the left, ‘Alex’, and on the right, ‘Lyle’. Both are in the Wolfe Gallery of the Toledo Museum of Art. They were painted in 1987 and 2003 respectively.
Styles in portraiture evolve along with styles in painting in general. Chuck Close, painting in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, has abandoned the use of surroundings for providing additional information about his subjects or for creating mood. He has also developed a style that seems like an extreme extension of Seurat’s pointillism. It challenges the viewer to move backward and forward and process his different responses to the images. When you look at the finest details of the ‘cells’, his equivalent of points or dots, it’s incredible (to me) to think that he had the imagination, standing at arm’s length from his canvases, to know how these separate entities would merge in the viewers’ eyes into surfaces readable as human faces. The imagination to know that colors that are never found in live human features can create a believable illusion of flesh. Adding to the amazing nature of these creations is the fact that they are on a monumental scale, much, much larger than life.
