Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Day 20
Fact for the day
Many chemotherapy drugs used to treat cancer, including breast cancer, are based on plant alkaloids. They may be extracted from the plants, or may be synthetic drugs developed to improve upon the activity of naturally occurring compounds in plants.
“Vinca alkaloids are a subset of drugs obtained from the Madagascar periwinkle plant. They are naturally extracted from the pink periwinkle plant, Catharanthus roseus G. Don and have a hypoglycemic as well as cytotoxic effects.”
“Vinca alkaloids are the second-most-used class of cancer drugs and will stay among the original cancer therapies. Different researches and studies for new vinca alkaloid applications will be carried out in this regard.”
How appropriate that the drugs are extracted from the PINK periwinkle!
If you couldn't tell, or didn't guess, the photo is of a kind of vinca. The central bloom was artificially (i.e. digitally) 'pinked' by me for this poster.
