Channeled surf along the 804 Trail, Yachats.
DP023-2016 Posted Saturday, January 23
In Yachats, north of the Yachats River, there is a stretch of the rocky coast were the path of a former coastal road is preserved in the 804 Trail. Fingers of rock bracket miniature beaches. In some cases they create channels which funnel the surf and force it into spectacular bursts of spray. This is a relatively puny burst, but joyful all the same. If you look closely, you can see a faint rainbow in the mist, against a rock backdrop, just to the left of the spray.
If you ever get a chance to visit Yachats, take the time to walk this short trail. There is public access to the south end of it at Smelt Sands State Park. I have mapped that access point, though the shot was taken a few hundred yards to the north, near The Fireside Motel, I believe.
